O que é a Dover Street Market? A loja de “caos belo” de Rei Kawakubo
What is Dover Street Market? It is Rei Kawakubo and Adrian Joffe’s multi-brand store concept, opened in London on 10 September 2004, built around Kawakubo’s idea of “beautiful chaos.” CDG lines sit beside outside fashion and streetwear in curated installations.

Unlike a standard department store, Dover Street Market was never meant to feel like a tidy grid of brands. Wikipedia credits Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons and her husband Joffe as founders. British Vogue quotes Joffe, DSM’s president, on wanting a new kind of retail room where accidents and overlaps between labels could happen. For Harajuku and Japanese streetwear context from the same decades, see Hiroshi Fujiwara and fragment and NIGO / BAPE.
Rei Kawakubo, Adrian Joffe, and the 2004 London Opening
The first store opened at 17–18 Dover Street in Mayfair on 10 September 2004. Wikipedia, Joffe’s AnOther anniversary essay, and contemporary press agree on that date. Wikipedia says the idea drew on London’s former Kensington Market: a place to stock Comme des Garçons and other labels Kawakubo and Joffe wanted in the mix, not a copy of a classic luxury atrium.
Kawakubo’s own phrase for the mood was “beautiful chaos,” repeated across Wikipedia, British Vogue, and later Haymarket coverage in Vogue. The Guardian / Observer visit in October 2004 described a site that still felt half under construction, with Kawakubo-selected “stall” worlds that included Azzedine Alaïa, Raf Simons, Junya Watanabe, Decades vintage, Judy Blame jewellery, and Comme des Garçons itself. That early roster is a snapshot, not a permanent menu.
How Dover Street Market Differs From a Normal Multi-Brand Store
A typical multi-brand floor sorts men’s and women’s racks, keeps fixtures uniform, and leaves brands looking similar. DSM does the opposite on purpose. Joffe’s AnOther essay recalls opening-day confusion: where is the men’s department, why is the café next to clothes, who is the customer. Departments were mixed deliberately. Installations such as Michael Howells’s “Shakespeare Meets Picasso” were meant as a visual set, not window dressing alone.
Wikipedia frames the stock as high fashion beside streetwear. Brands often design their own corners inside Kawakubo’s overall shell. Dezeen and WWD describe that split clearly for the later Haymarket building: Kawakubo sets the common architecture; labels build their own spaces. Joffe also describes closing the shop for a few days about every six months to rebuild for a new season. The store itself changes shape. That rebuild habit is one reason shoppers talk about DSM as a place to walk, not only a place to grab a logo tee.
Wikipedia’s illustrative brand list has included names such as Supreme, Palace, Nike, Stüssy, sacai, Rick Owens, Maison Margiela, Gucci, and JW Anderson, always next to Comme des Garçons lines. Treat that as “including,” never as a complete current inventory. British Vogue’s anniversary oral history quotes sacai’s Chitose Abe on Kawakubo’s retail idea and on DSM-exclusive “Sacai Gem” pieces each season. Streetwear and runway sit in the same building on purpose.
Dover Street Market London: From Mayfair to Haymarket
In March 2016, London DSM left Dover Street for the former Burberry building at 18–22 Haymarket. Wikipedia dates the move to March 2016 and notes the 1912 Thomas Burberry structure. Dezeen says the public opening was 19 March 2016 in a Grade II-listed building. WWD reported about 31,384 square feet across five floors, roughly three times the prior store. Joffe’s AnOther essay says the Dover Street landlord’s rent rise pushed the search, and the team accepted a larger Haymarket site south of Piccadilly against conventional retail wisdom.
The official DSM locations page still lists London at 18–22 Haymarket. Kawakubo kept overall control of the interior language while brands installed their own worlds, the same rule as on Dover Street. For U.S. readers planning a trip, Haymarket near Piccadilly Circus is the London address to use now, not the original Mayfair street that gave the company its name.
Dover Street Market Locations Beyond London
Wikipedia and the official locations directory list a small network beyond London. Dates below are high-level anchors from those sources and contemporary reports. Always check the local DSM site before you visit; hours and floors change.
- Ginza, Tokyo (2012): First international store. British Vogue covered the March 2012 opening; Wikipedia says 2012. Address: Ginza Komatsu West, 6-9-5 Ginza, Chuo-ku (DSM Ginza contact).
- New York (December 2013): 160 Lexington Avenue in Murray Hill, in the old New York School of Applied Design building (Wikipedia; DSM New York).
- Singapore (July 2017): Former British Army barracks on Dempsey Hill; Wikipedia notes a ground-floor-only format. Official address: Block 18 Dempsey Road.
- Beijing (February 2018): Converted from the earlier I.T Beijing Market joint venture (Wikipedia). Official address: Building 1, No. 269 Wangfujing Street.
- Los Angeles (fall 2018): Arts District; 606–608 Imperial Street (Wikipedia; official LA pages).
- Dover Street Parfums Market, Paris (October 2019): Beauty-focused shop, separate from the later full Paris store (Wikipedia; official locations list 11 bis rue Elzévir).
- Dover Street Market Paris (24 May 2024): Full store in the Marais at 35–37 rue des Francs-Bourgeois, in the Hôtel de Coulanges. Wikipedia, FashionUnited, and Harper’s Bazaar mark the May 2024 opening; Wikipedia notes a basement exhibition space.
Wikipedia also notes Rose Bakery cafés in London, Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles, and New York. Food next to fashion was part of the mix from the London years Joffe describes, not an afterthought.
CDG Lines, Disciples, and Streetwear Shoppers
If you already shop Asian streetwear, DSM is often where Comme des Garçons hangtags meet Supreme drops, Nike projects, and Japanese labels such as sacai in one walk. Wikipedia states plainly that the stores sell Comme des Garçons brands plus complementary fashion and streetwear. That is why a separate EastLyst guide on CDG lines (PLAY, Girl, Homme Plus, Shirt, BLACK, and more) pairs with this retail story: the lines explain the hangtag; DSM explains the room where many of those hangtags appear together.
The CDG orbit also shows up in the guest list. The Guardian’s 2004 report already placed Junya Watanabe among the opening stall holders. British Vogue’s anniversary piece includes Chitose Abe of sacai reflecting on Kawakubo’s store idea. Those names connect to the wider Kawakubo disciples thread EastLyst is drafting separately. Keep the distinction clear: DSM is a store concept owned in the Comme des Garçons world, not a clothing line you buy as “DSM brand” the way you buy PLAY.
Wikipedia’s note on the 2019 MONOCHROMARKET 15th-anniversary capsule lists a large multi-brand drop that included A Bathing Ape, Comme des Garçons, KAWS, Nike, Palace, sacai, Stüssy, Undercover, and others. High level only: anniversary projects are how DSM talks to both streetwear and fashion crowds at once. For BAPE context on EastLyst, see the live BAPE / NIGO story.
Why Dover Street Market Matters for Asian Streetwear Readers
U.S. shoppers who follow Tokyo and Harajuku labels often meet CDG through a heart tee, a wallet, or a sneaker collab, then hear friends talk about “DSM” as if it were another brand. It is the retail stage: Kawakubo and Joffe’s way of putting CDG family product next to streetwear and independent designers under one chaotic roof. Ginza puts that idea in Tokyo. Beijing and Singapore put it on Asian shopping maps. New York and Los Angeles put it on U.S. itineraries.

FAQ
What is Dover Street Market?
Dover Street Market is a multi-brand retailer founded by Rei Kawakubo and Adrian Joffe. The first London store opened on 10 September 2004 on Dover Street in Mayfair. Kawakubo called the concept “beautiful chaos”: Comme des Garçons lines and outside brands share curated, often rebuilt installations instead of a standard department-store layout.
Who owns Dover Street Market?
Wikipedia and British Vogue identify Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons and Adrian Joffe as founders. Vogue quotes Joffe as DSM president. The stores sit in the Comme des Garçons retail world. EastLyst is not a DSM or CDG partner.
Where is Dover Street Market London now?
London moved in March 2016 from 17–18 Dover Street to the former Burberry building at 18–22 Haymarket. Wikipedia, Dezeen, and WWD cover the relocation. The official locations page still lists Haymarket as the London address.
How is DSM different from a normal multi-brand store?
Floors mix categories on purpose, brands design their own spaces inside Kawakubo’s shell, and the shop is periodically closed and rebuilt for new seasons, as Joffe describes in AnOther. High fashion and streetwear share the same building. Uniform department-store fixtures are not the point.
Does Dover Street Market have stores in Tokyo, New York, and China?
Yes at a high level. Wikipedia and official pages place Ginza (Tokyo, 2012), New York (2013), Singapore (2017), Beijing (2018), Los Angeles (2018), and Paris (full store 2024), plus a separate Paris Parfums Market from 2019. Confirm addresses on the local DSM site before you go.
