What Is UNDERCOVER? Jun Takahashi and Harajuku Streetwear
What is UNDERCOVER brand? UNDERCOVER is the Japanese fashion label Jun Takahashi started in Tokyo in 1990 while studying at Bunka Fashion College. Known for punk roots, conceptual runway shows, and the motto “We Make Noise, Not Clothes,” it bridges Ura-Harajuku streetwear and Paris Fashion Week. This guide covers the brand story for U.S. shoppers.

Who Is Jun Takahashi?
Jun Takahashi (高橋盾) was born in 1969 in Kiryū, Gunma Prefecture. Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery and Business of Fashion both place him there. Wikipedia also lists the nickname Jonio and the date September 21, 1969.
BoF says he enrolled at Bunka Fashion College in 1988. Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO says he graduated in 1991. As a student he sang in a punk cover band, the Tokyo Sex Pistols. BoF and Highsnobiety both tie his early look to Vivienne Westwood and Sex Pistols culture. BoF adds that a Comme des Garçons show as a student convinced him fashion could be free creative expression, with Rei Kawakubo as a lasting model.
Founding UNDERCOVER in 1990
Opera City, BoF, Highsnobiety, the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, and Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO all date UNDERCOVER’s start to 1990, while Takahashi was still at Bunka. Fast Retailing’s UU press bio says the same. Some secondary pages say 1993; that year fits the NOWHERE shop better than the label itself, so this article treats 1990 as founding.
BoF reports the brand motto as “We Make Noise, Not Clothes.” UNDERCOVER’s own site still uses that line on product messaging. Takahashi told BoF he wanted to “make punk elegant” and to turn music and movies into clothes, not only pretty garments. FHCM describes an underground Tokyo mix of street fashion, art, and music that later moved into high-end fashion in Paris without dropping that worldview.
NOWHERE and the Ura-Harajuku Circle
In 1993 Takahashi and NIGO opened NOWHERE in Harajuku’s back streets. BoF, Highsnobiety, Vogue, and HUMAN MADE’s later corporate notice all place that joint shop in 1993. Highsnobiety says it sold American memorabilia and vintage as well as the founders’ and friends’ pieces, and became a base for Ura-Harajuku streetwear. NIGO’s A Bathing Ape grew from the same shop culture that same year.
Highsnobiety also notes Takahashi’s early collaboration with Hiroshi Fujiwara’s fragment design on Anarchy Forever Forever Anarchy (AFFA), a punk and Seditionaries-influenced project. That link helps explain why UNDERCOVER, BAPE, and fragment keep getting named together when people map Japanese streetwear history.
Tokyo Runway, Rei Kawakubo, and Paris
Opera City, Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO, and Fast Retailing date Takahashi’s first Tokyo collection show to 1994 for Autumn/Winter 1994–95. BoF and Highsnobiety say Rei Kawakubo bought an MA-1 bomber from that early work. Friendship and letters followed. Kawakubo encouraged him to show outside Tokyo and, before the first Paris show, talked UNDERCOVER up to people in the industry.
Opera City and Wikipedia place the Paris debut in 2002 with the Spring/Summer 2003 collection. Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO and Fast Retailing agree that seasonal Paris presentation began in 2002. Opera City also lists Mainichi Fashion Grand Prix awards in 1997 (New Face / Shiseido), 2001, and 2013, plus a 2009 Pitti Uomo 76 guest slot for the 2010 spring/summer men’s collection. In 2015 the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery staged the 25-year retrospective “LABYRINTH OF UNDERCOVER,” which BoF covered alongside a Rizzoli monograph.
Punk, Grace Dolls, and Chaos / Balance
UNDERCOVER’s design language stays punk-adjacent even when the clothes go couture-soft. Highsnobiety dates the handmade Grace Dolls to spring/summer 2009: human-sized figures built from ripped teddy bears with a bicycle-lamp face. BoF describes a related shock to cute teddy-bear imagery, including blocked-out eyes as an unofficial mascot mood. Highsnobiety also flags the recurring word pair “Chaos” and “Balance” on garments and goods, a simple dual theme that shows up across seasons.
Collections often pull from music and film. Highsnobiety lists artists and cinema threads across the archive. Treat that as a habit of reference, not a full season checklist. The clothes are meant to carry meaning. BoF quotes Takahashi: clothes have meaning, or they are not interesting.
Nike Gyakusou, Uniqlo UU, and Other Collabs
Highsnobiety says Takahashi’s Nike path opened in 2009 with a three-way UNDERCOVER × fragment design × Nike Match Classic. In fall 2010 Nike and Takahashi launched Gyakusou, a performance running line. WWD and Hypebeast date the first drop to October 2010. The name nods to running the “wrong” or reverse way in Tokyo parks with Takahashi’s group. BoF in 2015 called the Nike partnership one of the longer ones of its kind.
Fast Retailing announced that Uniqlo × UNDERCOVER “UU” would debut March 16, 2012 as family apparel for men, women, children, and babies, with kids and baby designed with Takahashi’s wife RICO. UNIQLO’s Japan press had flagged the project in July 2011. Highsnobiety also records Supreme capsules (SS15, FW16, and a SS18 Public Enemy three-way) at a high level. Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO and Highsnobiety date UNDERCOVER PRODUCTION, a creative unit for visuals and events, to 2018.
HUMAN MADE and the 2026 Deal
In June 2026, BoF and Vogue reported that NIGO’s HUMAN MADE planned to acquire UNDERCOVER. On September 11, 2026, HUMAN MADE Inc. announced a board resolution to buy all shares of UNDERCOVER CO., LTD., make it a subsidiary, and close in February 2027. The notice stresses the long friendship between Takahashi and NIGO, their 1993 NOWHERE shop, and a 2025 HUMAN MADE × UNDERCOVER collaboration.
BoF reported the definitive deal at 554 million yen (about $3.6 million) in cash for 100 percent of the company, with Takahashi stepping back from corporate management to focus on head design. Closing was still scheduled for February 2027 as of that report.
Why UNDERCOVER Still Matters for Asian Streetwear Shoppers
If you shop Asian streetwear in the U.S., UNDERCOVER’s timeline shows a path from Harajuku T-shirts to Paris runways without dropping punk and film references. NOWHERE tied Takahashi to NIGO and the wider Ura-Harajuku network that also includes Fujiwara. Gyakusou and UU show how the same designer worked with mass sportswear and basics without erasing the main line’s darker humor.
